Abstract:
Geophysical survey was undertaken in advance of proposed commercial and industrial development. Except for the practice area to the east of Newhall the site conditions were difficult for geophysical survey due to numerous obstacles. Much of the areas investigated by gradiometer survey were found to have been magnetically disturbed. This suggested that highly magnetic material, such as brick debris and iron had been buried at these locations. Despite these complications, anomalies of archaeological interest were identified in each of the three areas subjected to survey. A number of ditch type responses were recorded along with remains of possible industrial activity. Resistance survey was restricted to the practice area where a wide range in resistance readings was recorded. This was likely to have been due to variations in topography and landscaping. However, a number of trends were identified in the data that may have been of archaeological interest. In addition several high resistance anomalies were found to coincide with magnetic responses of archaeological interest. However, no evidence to suggest the presence of building remains was apparent in the data. [Au(abr)]
