Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken. The study site was located in a Priority Archaeological Zone. The report concluded that the study site had a low archaeological potential for the prehistoric periods. The study site had a moderate to good archaeological potential for the Roman period. The study site had low archaeological potential for the Anglo-Saxon and early medieval periods. During the late medieval period the study site was documented to have lain in an area of orchards and gardens. From c.1290 the study site lay in the gardens of Ely Palace, a small palace complex of the Bishops of Ely. From c.1576, the site became part of the gardens of Hatton House. The existing street 'Hatton Garden' was lain out in c.1659 and had remained fully developed ever since. The existing buildings on the study site dated to the late 19th century. These had deep basements. It was thought that as a consequence archaeological remains were unlikely to be present. It was proposed to redevelop the site by a comprehensive programme of demolition and reconstruction behind the existing facade. This redevelopment work would involve the lowering of basement levels by approximately 1.00m. The proposed redevelopment was unlikely to have any archaeological impact because of the extent of past post deposition impacts. [Au(adp)]
