Abstract: |
Two evaluation trenches and observations in cellared areas showed a well preserved sequence of medieval deposits. Dating from at least the 13th century, these are consistent with the picture obtained from historic maps of ribbon development along Biggins Street, with gardens or yards lying behind the buildings to the north. A few residual Roman and early medieval pottery sherds were also found. The complex, underlying palaeoenvironmental sequence was not fully evaluated, but is known to be up to 7m deep in some areas.
