Abstract: |
This was one of several sites of interest included on a comprehensive list of mains renewal work, due to start in March 1994, that was sent to the City of Hereford Archaeology Unit in November 1993. Gunners Lane is just within the city wall and there was a possibility that trenches could expose the pre-wall embankment or even the Saxon defences. Until the end of the 19th century, the end of West Street was sealed off from Victoria Street by the remains of one of the half-round towers belonging to the city wall. In the event, the trenches did not disturb any layers of archaeological importance, the ground being very disturbed by modern services.[AIP] |
