Abstract:
No prehistoric, Roman or medieval finds were recovered from 12 of the 13 excavated trenches, suggesting that most of the area had been in agricultural use throughout these periods. The exception was a trench on low-lying ground beside Farringdon Hill Lane, where a shallow wall trench was cut through a deposit containing 13th or 14th century pottery, with a handful of earlier sherds of 11th to 12th century date. The wall must have been part of a structure, probably of late medieval date, but the rarity of pottery in the surrounding area suggested that this may have been an agricultural building rather than a house. (Medieval rural settlement was usually characterised by pottery scatters in the immediate vicinity.) There were no 16th or early 17th century sherds from this area, and no structural evidence. Two shallow stone quarries working a seam of blue lias were found; one was backfilled in the 17th century, and they were probably both of early modern date. Later post-medieval structural remains in the southern corner of the site relating to buildings depicted on 18th century maps were revealed and recorded, as well as in situ masonry exposed in the riverbank. These remains may have been fragments of a mill. A backfilled watercourse on the north-east side of the site may have been a leat. Finally, on the east side of Farringdon Hill Lane, evidence of 18th century occupation including two post-medieval wells was found. [Au(abr)]
