Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the proposed new 1.4km new water main. The assessment study identified one previously recorded archaeological site within 250m of the pipeline route. The site was a past field system which survived as faint earthworks in the fields around Lowerfield Farm at the north-western end of the route. The proposed pipeline crossed one of a number of linear earthwork features in the field adjacent to High Fold Farm, which were likely to have represented the remains of relic field boundaries. In addition, there may have been the remnants of earlier structures adjacent to Hard Naze Farm. There were three Listed Buildings in the vicinity of the pipeline route at Lower Fold. A number of features of local historical interest were identified from cartographic sources and the site walkover survey. These included a trackway, bridge, sheep pounds or shelters and sections of stone walls containing sheep creeps. A number of flint scatters of prehistoric date had been recorded on high ground to the south of the study area, which suggested the potential for similar sites to extend into the area of the pipeline route. In order to further evaluate the impact of the proposed pipeline works an evaluation of the potential for prehistoric flint scatters along the proposed route should be undertaken in advance of construction together with the recording of any features of local historical interest which might be affected. A watching brief was proposed in the vicinity of both Hard Naze Farm and High Fold Farm in order to record any possible earlier structures and former field boundaries respectively. Any further mitigation with respect to the potential for prehistoric flint scatters would be dependent upon the results of the evaluation. [Au(abr)] |
