Abstract: |
The site had planning permission for residential redevelopment. The report concluded that the site had a good archaeological potential for the Palaeolithic period and a generally low archaeological potential for all other periods of human activity. However, it was not possible to predict if Palaeolithic remains would actually be present. The site was the location of an early modern house, 'Ilford Lodge', built in c.1797-98. Past post depositional impacts on any archaeological deposits would have been very severe. It was considered likely that any archaeological deposits post dating the Pleistocene brickearths would have already been removed. The proposed development could potentially have a significant impact on any archaeological deposits within or just below the brickearths at the surface of the gravel, through the cutting of deep strip footings and services. Beneath areas of surface parking and gardens proposed as part of the development, preservation in situ of any archaeological deposits should be achievable. On the basis of all the available evidence it was recommended that an archaeological watching brief be undertaken during construction groundworks to recover any Pleistocene remains and identify their context.
