Abstract: |
A watching brief over the digging of two boreholes just east of the medieval town wall, and north of Southampton Castle recorded natural deposits at different depths within each borehole. One borehole may have lain north of the site of the castle ditch; a topsoil layer of probable post-medieval date was observed. The other probably lay west of a former cliff edge; the lowest culturally or archaeologically significant deposit had perhaps accumulated in the gap between the town wall and cliff face in the medieval period, whilst the two overlying layers probably represented post-medieval backfilling of the gap and castle ditch. All other deposits exposed in the two boreholes dated from the late 18th century levelling and later redevelopment of the area. [Au] |
