Abstract:
The location of the proposed development was within the bounds of what was a suspected man-made platform at Howton Farm, Kenderchurch, which lies in an area of archaeological activity; neighbouring fields contain medieval earthworks, including a scheduled motte (HWCM 923). Small quantities of residual medieval and post-medieval artefacts were recovered from the trenches, which totalled 288 square metres. No significant features identifiable to earlier than the post-medieval period were identified. The evaluation demonstrated that the apparent raised area represents a natural rise in the ground, with Keuper Marl beds directly below the topsoil horizons. The rise has been truncated on the west side by the former line of the A465, which is slightly terraced into the slope of the ground. To the north, a hollow way represents the former cart entrance to the threshing door of the barn. A large sunken area south of the 'platform' possibly originated as a dewpond, with traces of a ditch leading into it from the east, where it is obscured by the railway embankment. These sunken areas around it give the impression of a platform. The evidence of the evaluation points to the proposed building lying in an area outside the medieval focus of activity, traditionally retained as pasture and rarely ploughed. The small quantity of medieval and later material recovered doubtless derives from the adjacent farmstead site.[AIP]
