Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a teaching resource centre identified that the south-eastern corner of a Roman fort and part of a southern annexe to the fort lay within the site. Part of a possible eastern fort annexe, under excavation to the north of the proposal area, may also have extended into the site. It was considered possible that these two annexes may have originally formed a single L-shaped annexe adjoining the southern and eastern sides of the fort. Neolithic flint implements had been found within Roman contexts at the site, and a group of burnt mounds of probable Bronze Age date had been recorded to the west. It was noted that, although the fort interior and defences had been fairly intensively investigated, a number of important academic questions remained to be answered. The final layout of the development scheme remained to be defined; proposals for trial trenching across the whole of the proposal site were therefore considered, with the exception of two areas not available for evaluation, and of areas which had previously been investigated and recorded.
