Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken in connection with a proposed development at Mangrove Hall. The area of proposed development lay to the south of Hertford, on the western side of Mangrove Road, Hertford. Historically it had been a private residence and associated gardens, latterly it had been a University Hall of Residence. The Hertfordshire SMR noted that a Roman cremation cemetery was discovered within the site boundaries in 1899, however, its exact location was unknown. It was concluded that field evaluation, initially through geophysical survey, would be required. To this end a geophysical survey was undertaken, the results of which indicated the presence of remains, potentially of archaeological significance. Therefore it would be necessary for further fieldwork to be undertaken prior to development. It was expected that this would take the form of evaluation by excavation. [Au(abr)] |
