Abstract: |
Following an initial archaeological assessment of the Holme Head Mill in February 1998, it was decided that further analysis was required to clarify the precise relationship between Blocks F and H in advance of development. Parts of Block F were Listed, and there was concern that plans to convert the buildings of this textile mill for residential development might result in the loss of archaeological evidence. The present report formed an appendix to the original assessment report. Inspection showed that very few industrial or engineering feaatures remained. No information about the function of specific rooms had been forthcoming, beyond that which had been included in the earlier assessment. This was because documentary sources gave only the most general indication of functions carried out in different parts of the mill, although they showed the outlines and in some cases interiors of the buildings. Likewise, the absence of industrial or engineering features meant that it was not possible to provide further detail concerning the function of individual rooms. Some additional detail concerning the phasing of the structure was provided. [Au] |
