Abstract: |
Six machine trenches, excavated to evaluate land proposed for development demonstrated the substantial removal of subsoil during the terracing of the site prior to the construction of buildings in the 1940's. Archaeological features identified included those pertaining to the British Telecom training centre which occupied the site, a small coal cellar and soak-away relating to the 1940's structures or to a house built in 1907, a coarse-built dry stone wall butted by a layer of redeposited material yielding finds of 18th century date, and a small brick-lined culvert cut through redeposited material containing 18th century pottery and sealed by a modern make-up layer of cinders.
