Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out at the site of a moat, which had been backfilled in recent years and which lay in the area of a proposed public park. The work was undertaken in order to examine the profile of the moat and determine whether or not its reinstatement would be possible. The moat was found to have been backfilled with a mixture of materials, including modern household rubbish and demolition debris. This continued to below the level of the water table, but it was not possible to determine its depth. No features of archaeological interest were revealed in the moat's interior, although late 15th/early 16th century pottery, slag and undated roof tile fragments were recovered. The large quantity of roof tile implied the presence of a substantial structure. It was concluded that removal of 20th century deposits to recreate a waterfilled moat would be possible, but that it should be carried out under archaeological supervision. [AIP] |
