Abstract: |
Archaeological examination of a rotunda within Sarsden House, a Grade II* Listed Building, was undertaken during repair works and the installation of floor heating. Stripping of plaster from the walls allowed an examination of the fabric of the pre-rotunda courtyard, revealing evidence for window openings, doorways and other architectural features. Analysis of paint samples revealed a number of decorative schemes, of which the earliest comprised a pink and black mottled marble effect. Conversion of the late 17th century courtyard of the house into a rotunda had first been proposed by Humphrey Repton in the late 18th century, but archaeological evidence suggested that it had not actually been constructed until after 1829, to a new design proposed by his son, George Repton.
