Abstract:
The evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of a new path. A 2.5m by 1.5m trench was excavated against the buttress of the 15th century south porch. The stratigraphy across the trench comprised largely of two layers, a topsoil 0001, above a disturbed subsoil 0002. Disturbed deposit 0002 may have represented a combination of material redeposited during several phases of past church construction, and grave-earth churned up by hundreds of years of continuous burial. Artefacts from 0002 ranged from medieval to modern in date. Three graves were identified at the base of the trench. Below the buttress foundation was a large number of disarticulated bones, including found skulls and several long bones. The skeletal material probably originated from medieval burials disturbed during the construction of the 15th century porch. The excavation revealed that the deposits to be affected by the path, composed mostly of modern and previously disturbed material devoid of any significant archaeological remains, while burials present extended below the level of the trench, beyond the reach of any destructive impact the path may have.
