Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during geotechnical and contamination works in advance of a proposed development. Trial pits revealed the remains of an old dry dock, where Brunel's first great ship, the Great Western, was built. A possible structure associated with a nearby timber yard was also located as well as post-medieval pits containing iron slag and glass cullett. The area was known to have been subject to considerable ground reduction in the 19th and 20th centuries. [Au(adp)] |
