Abstract: |
An evaluation of a development plot at the west end of the medieval town and covering a number of medieval properties was carried out in March 1994 on behalf of Vero and Everitt Ltd.. In the 19th century the properties had been developed as 'yards' with workers' cottages behind the frontage, and a hat factory was built to the south. Two trial trenches were dug, one on the frontage, the other in the centre of the properties in an area open in the 19th century. The frontage trench produced some 13th-15th century pottery but the surviving building remains were 18th and 19th century. The second trench contained some surviving medieval stratigraphy, a 14th/15th century layer cut by two postholes, under a layer of 19th century make-up.[AIP] |
