Abstract: |
The assessment was concentrated upon the area in and around 29-35 High Street, Watford. The report indicated that there was some evidence for the prehistoric and Roman occupation in the general area. It appeared likely that by the mid/late 1100's an urban centre was developing along the axis of the high street. During the 13th century Watford underwent a period of prosperity and growth and it was suspected that the study site may have been built in this period. During the post-medieval period the site saw a succession of buildings. It was not until further redevelopment 1940s-1960s that the full extent of the site was developed. As a result it was anticipated that any medieval deposits on the site would have been impacted by several phases of 20th century building on the site. Nevertheless, although some parts of the study site would have had no or poor survival conditions, elsewhere only one or two generations of 20th century building suggest some potential for archaeological survival.
