Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief during the groundwork for the construction of a single storey dwelling to provide ancillary accommodation, with study, guest suite, garden store and garage, at 1 High Street, Bourton-on-the Water, Gloucestershire was undertaken. The watching brief was carried out as a condition attached to planning permission granted by Cotswold District Council (04/03305/FUL). A compact course of close-set limestone blocks lay at the base of the deepest point recorded, which was a large hollow, cut into the natural gravel at the north-western end of the development site, in the area of the new garage. The hollow may have been a former gravel extraction site, or more likely, given the presence of the limestone structure, the result of the extraction of stone from the foundations of the medieval manor buildings. The hollow was filled and subsequently covered with a compacted stone surface. After the cutting and filling of a small sub-circular feature, this surface was covered at its north-western edge by the south-east side of a raised, cobbled surface. A large stone block formed the east corner of the cobbled area and a step down onto the earlier surface. This appeared to have been part of the post-medieval manor gardens. A small ditch or gully, running north-east to south-west, marked the line of a former boundary between the No.1 and 2 High Street properties. [Au(adp)]
