Abstract:
A watching brief was maintained during topsoil stripping for a borrow pit. Inspection of overburden cleared areas recorded no artefactual evidence and/or features of signficance. The only artefacts recorded comprised heavily glazed post-medieval pottery and slag clinker. In the eastern corner of the site, a sequence alluvial and peaty sediments resting upon basal sands and gravels were recorded and sampled for environmental remains. The sands and gravels comprised an upper sequence of meandering river sediments, aggraded in the Holocene by reworking if the valley floor gravels, and a lower sequence of braided river deposits aggraded during the last glaciation, with evidence of permafrost conditions. A small basin was located in the eastern corner of the quarry, within the top three metres of sand and gravels and was infilled with organic material. No deeply buried archaeological remains were recorded within the sands and gravels. A single antler of Red Deer was recovered from the workings during the digging of the first 3m spit of sand and gravel. A stone structure uncovered during the excavation of a de-watering trench was recorded and interpreted as a watering hole or trough of probable 17th to late 18th century date. [Au(adp)]
