Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site. The site was situated in an area of archaeological potential as identified by a preceding desk-based archaeological assessment. The assessment referred to the possibility that medieval or later structural remains, perhaps associated with the city water-supply system, might be encountered within the application area. In addition, post-medieval and early modern occupation evidence, including the remains of a 19th century enclosed garden, were thought to have survived within the site. Evaluation trenching revealed no surviving features or deposits of medieval date. A series of 18th century dump deposits were encountered, however, against a deliberate terracing cut and a brick-built revetment wall-footing. These deposits and features may have represented landscaping activity and spoil dumps associated with the construction of the Bellevue properties immediately upslope of the site c.1792. Garden soil horizons were also recorded, associated with the history of the site from the 19th century as an enclosed nursery or kitchen garden. [Au(abr)]
