Abstract: |
An area of ground slumping close to Newark Castle's riverside wall was investigated. A post-medieval robber trench which had removed an earlier wall was identified with floor surfaces to either side of the robbed out section, indicating the existence of buildings on both sides. The only dating evidence was a sherd of probable 14th century pottery from above one of the floor surfaces. The slump was shown to have been caused by water discharging from a gully onto a grass bank area, with water accumulating in voids left by the rotting of the roots of a tree which had been removed at some point earlier this century.
