Abstract:
A full survey and analysis of a 17th century Grade II Listed timber framed building was carried out prior to dismantling. Part of the building's importance lay in the fact that it may have pre-dated the Great Fire of Wem, which occurred in 1677. It had been refurbished in the late 17th century and in the late 18th-early 19th century. The survey recorded evidence suggesting that a fourth bay had existed at the south end of the building, which was truncated when no. 62 High Street was built in the 18th century. From this time until recently, no. 2 Market Street and no. 62 High Street functioned as one building. It was not clear whether no. 2 Market Street had originally been part of the High Street frontage, or whether it formed part of the infilling and extensions back from the burgage plot frontage.
