Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken in response to a proposal to lower the floor of the existing building on the site. Corner Cottage, a Grade II listed building, was one half of an early 16th century timber framed house which was divided and the upper floor inserted in the mid 7th century. In the south-east corner of the building two large post holes were identified. These may have represented an earlier timber structure on the site. At the north-west corner of the cottage, in the area of the cross passage, was a pit that contained a large quantity of charred oats. The position of the pit suggested that it predated the building. Neither the pit nor the post holes were dated but they were both overlain by possible floor make-up deposits of perhaps 15th century date. Evidence for recent brick underpinning of the south wall of the cottage was also revealed. [Au] |
