Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed submission of a planning application for residential and commercial redevelopment. The site comprised a large parcel of land in an urban setting situated within an area of archaeological potential shown on Borough constraint maps. It was east of the historic core of Deptford and was farmland in 1623, and probably continued as such until the 19th century. The archaeological potential, therefore, reflected the possible presence of prehistoric, Roman and Saxon occupation sites, rather than later periods. The western portion of the site was terraced in to the ground, suggesting quarrying or possibly bomb damage. That area of the gravel terrace, therefore, probably had little potential. For the remaining areas there was little to suggest truncation of archaeologically relevant levels, and for the eastern portion, these levels may have been buried beneath alluvium. [Au(adp)] |
