Abstract: |
An archaeologial desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to its proposed comercial redevelopment. The results of the assessment indicated that archaeological remains occur on site. An evaluation in 1977 showed large and small ditchs/drains, possibly associated with a 17th/18th century industrial site. Work at 15 Liverpool Road indicated that a nearby brewery and the ditches recorded in 1977 were full of animal bones, possibly from a slaughterhouse. Any potential remains would probably date to the post-medieval period, the 16th to 18th centuries, and may be concerned with a possible industrial setting. It was also possible that there would be evidence of prehistoric, Saxon and medieval activity. The medieval and post-medieval periods offered the most potential for archaeological remains. It was possible that large scale 19th century levelling and dumping had helped to protect much of the ancient land surfaces but basementing and modern services may have cut through much of the upper stratigraphy. The level of the proposed basement would remove all archaeological deposits during the redevelopment of the site. [Au(adp)] |
