Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was undertaken in the gap in the present boundary of the Castle, in the area of the medieval curtain wall on the east side of the Town Ward. The excavation revealed the western side of a substantial cut feature, aligned north-south, which may have represented the inner face of a robber trench associated with the original curtain wall. The feature cut stratified deposits but no structures, and contained black organic garden soil mixed with a substantial quantity of dressed stone. Part of a wall foundation was uncovered at the northern end of the trench, which formed part of a structure attached to the rear (west) face of the curtain wall. At the southern end of the trench there was some evidence for the truncated remains of an earthen bank which would have lain behind the curtain wall. [Au(adp)] |
