Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted in advance of a proposed development. A stone and clay bank was partially exposed along the Westgate Road frontage. This could have been a road surface (possibly of Roman date) although too little was seen to confirm this. A gravel filled gully 8m behind the street frontage was also of probable Roman date. These features were covered by a thick deposit of silt containing much animal bone and pottery of 14th and 15th century date. Archaeological deposits containing 17th to 18th century pottery were also observed. Owing to the significance of the Roman remains, it was recommended that any future development on the site be subjected to an archaeological watching brief. [Au(adp)] |
