Abstract: |
The evaluation revealed the presence of archaeological remains dating from the14th century to the modern period. Remains of 14th century date consisted of a possible tenement boundary ditch, building alteration or demolition, and possible craft-working activity. In the early to late post-medieval period, horticultural soils developed gradually through the dumping of domestic refuse, particularly towards the rear of the property. Towards the frontage, structural activity was encountered and may have related to the original mid-17 century form of the Dutch House and a later, possibly early 19th century building, now demolished. The latter structure appeared to have occupied the site until the 1980s, after which time a hard brick yard surface was laid, demonstrating the plot to have been occupied by buildings in the interim.
