Abstract: |
Three trial trenches were excavated as an evaluation in advance of the proposed future development. Two of the trenches, at the north (Tr.1) and west (Tr.3) of the site, revealed no features or deposits necessarily earlier than the late 18th century. In the remaining trench (Tr.2), at the south-east corner of the site, possible riverine deposits containing early to mid 17th century pottery were encountered at between 0.3m and 0.4m below present ground level. These deposits overlay a rough sandstone rubble revetment, apparently following the same alignment as the modern street frontage, which may have been associated with the management of the Cong burn side. No stratified medieval or earlier material was located in the evaluation. A single abraded sherd of samian pottery from Trench 2 was likely to have been deposited by river action. [Au(abr)] |
