Abstract: |
A desk based assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed extension to existing visitor car parking facilities in the grounds of Chartwell House. The assessment established that the site lay within an area of low to moderate potential for archaeological remains dating to the Iron Age and medieval periods, with a low potential for all other periods. Based on current evidence, the archaeological potential did not appear to have been of sufficient importance to constrain development, although given that the site was situated within the grounds of a Grade II Listed Registered Park and Garden, should significant deposits be encountered, which was considered likely, they could have merited preservation in situ.
