Abstract: |
A landscape, foreshore auger and metal detector survey of the inlet, adjacent foreshore and its immediate hinterland was undertaken in advance of emergency repairs to the Blackwell Stairs flood defences. This allowed the report to conclude that the timber revetment formed the edge of a slipway to its south, whose location was shown as early as 1867; the revetment itself was certainly later, possibly early 20th century, and a rebuild of an earlier revetment. The baseplate further down the dock was almost certainly part of the same structure. No other structures were observed and the survey produced no further significant evidence for foreshore activity.
