Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained during demolition and contractors' excavation work prior to a new housing development on the site. The watching brief followed an archaeological evaluation of the site which demonstrated the presence of medieval deposits below c.1.7m of modern fill relating to Victorian buildings and the recent use of the site as a garage. A number of trial pits were excavated by the contractors and modern structures associated with the garage were removed across the site. The watching brief demonstrated that where observed, cellars of the Victorian buildings had truncated all deposits to the level of the natural geological horizon. Similarly a number of structures relating to the garage had deep intrusive foundations. No medieval or earlier deposits were identified in the course of the work. The earliest deposits observed were of 18th-19th century date, relating to the use of the site as an open space or perhaps an orchard. [Au] |
