Abstract:
A desktop assessment was undertaken to determine the archaeological implications of the proposed residential development of the site. Grantham originated during the Saxon period and by the medieval period the focus of settlement would have been the Market Place. The site was located to the southwest of Market Place and lay to the east of the site of Grey Friars, Franciscan Friary. A stream, just west of the investigation site probably formed the Friary precinct and in consequence there was a very low likelihood of any associated remains occurring within the site. Map evidence indicated the area around the proposed development was divided up into elongated plots of typical medieval date. This, together with the site's location near the market indicated that evidence of occupation and trading activities were likely to have occurred in the area. The present buildings along Westgate and Market Place belonged to the later 18th and early 19th centuries. A walkover survey identified a tarmac car park and two outbuildings and an electricity cable within the northern boundary of the site. [Au(abr)]
