Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken as part of the renewal of planning permission for the site. The site was located on the presumed western boundary of the Middle Saxon settlement of Lundenwic. Whitcomb Street followed the line of the medieval road of Hedge Lane. There was a range of sites and find spots recorded from the area, including prehistoric artefacts, a Roman well, ditches and cremation jar, mid-Saxon pits, quarry pits and artefacts, medieval artefacts and post-medieval features. It was unlikely that horizontal archaeological deposits would have survived beneath the basements but there was still the potential for the presence of deeply cut archaeological features. The proposed development would remove any surviving archaeological deposits in the area of the new lift shaft and at the locations of any proposed foundations or other groundworks. The proposed options for development would probably affect any surviving made groud/archaeological deposits. The report recommended that further evaluation be undertaken. [Au(adp)] |
