Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out during the excavation of test pits for both geotechnical and archaeological purposes in preparation for the proposed Centenary Development of the Tate Gallery. During the monitoring of these excavations, extensive structural remains associated with the former Millbank Penintentiary were recorded. These consisted primarily of brick foundation walls built on substantial concrete foundation slabs. It was evident that foundation trenches and ground reduction relating to the 1927 gallery extension had truncated these structures in places, however, significant structural remains did exist across much of the site. Naturally deposited alluvial material was encountered as high as 0.51m OD and consisted of stratified clays, silts and sands. In two of the trenches, undisturbed deposits of fibrous peat were recorded overlaying this alluvium. Samples were taken through these deposits, the analysis of which indicated that they were laid down during the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. The presence of charcoal in the deposits indicated human activity of this date in the immediate vicinity. [Au(adp)]
