Abstract: |
The objective of the programme was to recover artefacts and record all archaeological features and deposits exposed during preliminary groundwork for the construction of a residential unit on the site. This involved a small reduction in the ground level of the site and the excavation of standard strip foundations. With the exception of a post-medieval water cistern, a short length of culvert and fragments of probable post-medieval garden wall, no significant archaeological structures, deposits or artefacts were revealed during the reduction of the ground level or the excavation of the building footings. After monitoring of approximately 75% of the groundwork it was concluded that archaeologically significant remains were unlikely to be present elsewhere within the development area and, after consultation with the City Archaeologist for Bristol, the archaeological monitoring was terminated.
