Abstract: |
This desk-based assessment of the important urban friary site of Whitefriar's initially considered implications for the continuing debate over the layout of the Late Saxon town and its defensive system. There was historical evidence for post-Conquest development of this general area by the city's Bishop. During the 12th century St Paul's Hospital and the parish church of St James' were established at the edge of the newly urbanised area. A bridge over the River Wensum was provided by 1106. The precinct of the Whitefriars' House, which was founded in 1256, and it's associated buildings (including an Anchorite's House by the bridge) and gardens, eventually occupied the whole block, incorporating earlier buildings. It was possible that the first church was superseded in the mid-14th century by a new friary church. Archaeological evidence indicated later medieval (13th-14th century) reclamation in this riverside quarter. Whilst historical and cartographical evidence pointed to the removal of the friary church at Dissolution, there was strong evidence that many other buildings and dwellings continued in use until the 19th century and beyond. Industrial development of this area expanded, initially over garden areas. The impact of industrial development and street re-alignment on the survival of archaeological remains was considered here in the context of archaeological potential. [Au(abr)] |
