Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken to determine any constraints affecting the location of archaeological trial trenches at Norwich Road. Information relating to previous archaeological discoveries, cartographic and aerial photographic sources and current land-use and services were examined. In addition, a site visit was undertaken to assess current ground conditions. Cartographic sources indicated only limited activity within the evaluation site between the late 18th and early 20th centuries. From c.1930, the site became a holiday camp, initially with wooden chalets. These structures were likely to have had shallow foundations with a minimal impact on any buried archaeology. During the Second World War the site was used as an army camp and brick and concrete buildings were erected. The positions of these were visible on contemporary aerial photographs. After the war the site became a caravan park. No substantial structures appeared to have been associated with this use although a large number of services were present across the site. The presence of these services constituted the main constraint to the positioning of archaeological trial trenches at the site. The positions for six 15m x 2m trial trenches were proposed in this report. These were situated to best sample the potential of the site, whilst avoiding areas of previous disturbance and current services. [Au(abr)]
