Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out following the dismantling of a Grade II Listed Building. The West Wing of the structure had contained substantial remains of a timber-framed house which had a timber plaque dated 1655. Documentary evidence had shown that a building had lain on the site in 1631, prior to the construction date of the present building. Within the footprint of the West Wing, evaluation trenching established that the stratigraphy had been extensively truncated prior to the construction of the concrete floor, which had probably been laid in the 20th century. Because of this truncation only the deepest features had survived. A post-hole or pit which contained a sherd of late medieval pottery and a more substantial feature, possibly a quarry pit, were recorded. Within the 19th century East Wing, severe truncation was also noted. The foundations of the 19th century building, relict elements of an earlier hearth, an undated post-hole and a natural tree hole were revealed. It was concluded that the absence of surviving remains relating to an earlier structure on the site of the West Wing did not imply that no earlier bulding had existed. [AIP]
