Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in relation to the proposed demolition of the existing structure and its replacement with a new retail unit. The assessment established that no statutory designations applied to the site. However, the site lay at the heart of medieval Chelmsford and archaeological deposits, albeit truncated by current and post-medieval structures on the site, could be anticipated. The assessment concluded that although the site was of high archaeological potential this had to an extent been compromised by the construction of basements and excavation of foundations in the late 1940's and more recently.
