Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site which, until recently, had been part of the Sutton and East Surrey Waterworks. This had since been acquired for redevelopment as domestic housing. The majority of the site appeared to have been destroyed by quarrying and the construction of the waterworks themselves. There was, however, the possibility that unrecorded early medieval settlement may have survived along the frontages of the site along Love Lane and Gander Green Lane. The Bourne Hole, a natural spring, was also of interest as ancient springs were often the sites of religious worship. It was felt unlikely that there would have been any habitation close to the spring, due to the problem of flooding. The report recommended that a small evaluation be undertaken near the Bourne Hole and on the Gander Green Lane frontage to determine the extent, date, condition and significance of any archaeological remains.
