Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks associated with foundations and services for an exhibition and new donkey stable within the Stable Yard, and further groundworks within the Equerry's Yard, at Carrisbrooke Castle, a SAM. The castle appeared to have originally been a Saxon burh. A shell keep and earthwork defences had been erected in the medieval period, and the castle was modified as an artillery fortification in the 16th century. Later modifications had also occurred. During the watching brief, late post-medieval/modern make-up layers and eleven earlier layers were recorded. Of the earlier layers, one, a demolition/levelling layer, could be dated to the medieval period. None of the other earlier layers could be closely dated. Features included an undressed limestone wall, situated below a post-medieval/modern make-up layer, and a modern soakaway which may have originally been a well. Medieval and early post-medieval pottery, animal bones and a fragment of clay pipe were recovered. A small amount of medieval floor and roof tile was also found. It was concluded that damage to archaeologically significant deposits during the course of the works had been slight. [AIP]
