Abstract:
Test-pitting and a resistivity survey were undertaken in advance of a proposed sewerage scheme. The pipe route lay adjacent to the east side of Stanton Moor, an area of outstanding archaeological importance. A resistivity survey of sample areas produced anomalies but these were mainly related to features visible on the surface and the method was not considered useful as a prospecting tool. Finds were of the medieval and later periods. Analysis of the vertical distribution of finds by date suggested that the soil profile had long remained undisturbed by ploughing, and had possibly never been ploughed. No localised finds concentrations were perceived within the artefact distributions. The horizontal distribution of finds suggested the gradual expansion of manured pasture from the medieval periods onwards, starting at the south end of the route and proceeding up to the slope towards Stanton Lees. This correlated with historical documentation, indicating clearances from c.1250 or before. The route crossed at least three artificially modified streams of unknown date, known locally as soughs. No other man-made features were discovered during the test-pitting, but remains of these such as, for example, field systems, settlement areas or even localised finds concentrations could have escaped detection between the pits.
