Abstract: |
The assessment identified that the proposed development lay within the precinct of the medieval Barnstaple Priory, although the principal buildings of the priory were believed to have been confined to the area north of Coronation Street. The major part of the site appeared to have been devoid of any structural development. However, the Boutport Street frontage may possibly have been developed in the medieval period. A deed of 1344 suggested that development of the east side of the street had begun by this time, and a church rate of 1507 indicated further expansion. [Au] |
