Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on groundworks associated with a scheme to improve drainage at Bromham Mill. Historic documents suggested that the site of the existing mill (dated to the 18th-19th centuries), had been utilised for a considerable period of time. It was possible that the mill recorded in the Domesday Book was sited in the area. Cutting of the drainage trenches provided an opportunity to examine both the street frontage adjacent to the Stagsden Road and the central area adjacent to the standing barn and mill buildings. Although the drainage trenches were only narrow, between 0.3 and 0.6m wide, it was possible to identify a variety of archaeological deposits, mostly wall footings, surviving below deposits associated with the construction of the present surface. Four areas of features were defined. The drainage trench adjacent to the Stagsden Road revealed significant disturbance associated with the insertion of services including a sewage pipe. These truncated an area of limestone rubble and the remnants of a wall. Two concentrations of walls were exposed in the vicinity of the standing buildings. The first concentration was situated to the south of the present mill. A footing defined the corner of a building of mixed limestone and brick construction. Further east towards the river, the trench exposed a limestone wall, orientated parallel to the mill building. The second concentration of wall footings was situated to the west of the mill. Several walls were identified, including opposing walls of a possible building defined by substantial limestone footings and a possibly associated surface. A brick wall corresponded to a sub-division of the central area shown on a late 19th century map. In the north-western part of the site the trench revealed part of the brick structure for the weighbridge. To the west of the barn the upper portion of a possible well, infilled with limestone rubble was exposed. No dateable artefacts were recovered from any of the features. However, all the available historic maps of the mill area indicated that the central yard, defined by the mill and the barn, contained no buildings. This area was, however, sub-divided by a series of boundaries by 1883. This suggested that the wall footings, especially those constructed from limestone, which did not correspond to the mapped boundaries defined structures which related to earlier, previously unrecorded phases of use of the site.
