Abstract: |
A detailed assessment was undertaken into the archaeological and ecological implications of the construction of a new water pipeline to Parracombe, Devon. The study involved an assessment of available archaeological, historical and ecological records and a walkover survey, to consider present survival and field conditions. A preliminary study identified a number of areas of potential impact, most of which were avoided as a result of re-routing and abandoning an alternative route to the south of the A39 for part of the route. In particular, areas of sensitive vegetation adjacent to the River Heddon were avoided. Some areas of archaeological potential remained near the historic core of the Churchtown settlement, but much of the area had been disturbed by modern development. The Scheduled Ancient Monument known as Holwell Castle would not be affected by the proposals. Mitigation measures were proposed. [Au] |
