Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a car-park and extension at Broomfield House, a Grade II* Listed Building. The earliest surviving part of the house dated to c. 1550. The building had been enlarged several times, and had been extensively remodelled in c. 1726, at which time the gardens were also remodelled. During the evaluation, late 17th-early 18th century garden features were recorded, including a cut terrace surmounted by a wall with drainage in the stable yard, and a contemporary garden deposit on a lower terrace level. A gravel path of similar date was revealed to the south east of the house, whilst a possibly earlier deposit produced a Bellarmine sherd of the late 16th-early 17th century. Structures of probable 18th century date were also observed. Further excavation of part of the site was anticipated. [AIP]
