Abstract: |
The watching brief revealed the presence of a primary doorway in the north wall, with the remains of the Heavitree stone steps, which would have led down to a lower level barn to the north. The cow shed was not shown on the Alphington Tithe Map c.1842 but its east cob wall may have represented the depicted yard boundary wall that was incorporated into the mid to late 19th century structure. Patches of cobbles in the yard were consistent with those exposed in the evaluation excavation. The presence of cobbles under the garden to the north of the store indicated that the larger yard area was also depicted on the c.1842 tithe map. [Au(adp)] |
